On March 14th, the winners of the XIX edition of the International Prize for the Quality of Extra Virgin Olive Oil of the International Fair of Expoliva Olive Oil 2019 were named, an event that takes place from May 15th to 18th in the city of Jaén. These prizes are awarded by the Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Olive Groves and Olive Oil.
The jury that awarded the prizes was made up of a wide variety of components: experts in sensory analysis from the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development relating to the Regional Government of Andalusia; the Agrifood Arbitration Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA); the Institute for Agrarian and Fisheries Research and Training of the Regional Government of Andalusia (Ifapa); Agrifood Laboratories of the Andalusian Agrarian and Fisheries Management Agency; the University of Jaén, the Institute of Grease of the CSIC of Seville and Citoliva.
Oils participating in the contest
In other editions the participating oils belonged to the Peninsula, but this edition has had a global character, that is to say, participants at international level attending to the development of a project of the last Strategic Plan of the Province of Jaén. 151 oils have been examined to choose the prizewinner. The oils presented belong to 10 Autonomous Communities in Spain producing oil: Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha, Murcia, Extremadura, Castilla y León, Comunidad de Madrid, Navarra, Comunidad Valenciana, Canarias and Catalonia) and 19 Spanish provinces: Jaén, Córdoba, Sevilla, Málaga, Granada, Almería, Huelva, Albacete, Cáceres, Badajoz, Barcelona, Las Palmas, Taragona, Navarra, Madrid, Cuidad Real, Alicante, Valencia and Murcia). At the international level, countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Portugal and Uruguay have participated.
The oils that have been selected will be presented at the VII International Exhibition Expoliva Virgen Extra, also held from 15 to 18 May.
